A case report of toxic psychosis induced by Phencyclidine



Abstract
The authors reported a case of an accidental injection of an undetermined amount of PCP, a veterinary drug, to a 23 year-old Korean woman.
The case was brought to attention at Korea General Hospital. Emergency Room; the patient was later admitted to the department of Internal Medicine and was eventually transfered to the department of Neuropsychiatry. It is believed that this case is first such reported here in Korea.
The characteristic findings of this case were as the following;
1) She was found to be disturbed with bizarre behavior and agitations after 13 hours of deep sedation following the injection.
2) At the time of admission the patient was observed with manifestations such as elevated mood, agitation, illogical speech, childish behavior, and disorientation to person. However, delusion and hallucination were unremarkable.
3) The patient was found with horizontal nystagmus and a significant increase in deep tendon reflex.
4) The laboratory findings which included the EEG disclosed nothing specific.
5) The patient was administered 10-20mg of diazepam; her condition was stabilized after the 8th hospital day.
